Synopsis Joan is hired as a private nurse for invalid Mavis. Mavis is visited each day by Rod, who blames himself for the accident that left her in a wheelchair. Rod and Joan fall in love. Joan discovers Mavis is faking her condition so Rod won’t leave her: Mavis warns Joan not to reveal the truth or she’ll have the nurse blacklisted. But Rod learns the truth anyway, and realises the accident wasn’t his fault either. He and Joan will be married.

Man on a Train! (7 pages)
Synopsis Susie leaves her small town to visit her grandmother, “300 whole miles away!” Her maiden Aunt Prissy warns her to avoid “big city men.” On the train, Susie is suspicious of fellow passenger Richard, slapping his face when they accidentally stumble into each other, but changes her mind when he defends her from a masher. However, Susie doesn’t speak to him before she gets off the train. Susie confesses to her grandmother that he might have been her “big chance” for romance. Grandma tracks down Richard and gets him to the farm on a pretext: he and Susie are reunited.

The Man Who Got Away! (8 pages)
Synopsis High school student Jayne has a crush on Harry, a “much older” business associate of her father (he’s 29), but Harry marries another woman. After graduation, Jayne moves to New York and meets “dozens of men” but they all pale in comparison to her memory of Harry. She dates lawyer Paul but after 3 years still can’t commit to marriage; she promises an answer after she visits her hometown. Harry is now a “rapidly-aging male going soft and paunchy, his hair receding fast.” Harry makes a pass at her and Jayne rejects him. Now freed from her “fantastic memories,” she decides to marry Paul.
